Bryony Pritchard - Community

Yorkshire Sculpture Park invited artists Bryony, Liadin Cooke and Sally Storr to deliver a summer school for the Shared Horizon Holiday Club with refugee families.

We developed a range of creative activities to increase enjoyment and interaction with themes of the Yinka Shonibare exhibition for 30 children with their adults. Shonibare’s work focuses on cultural identity, colonialism and post-colonialism through sculpture, installation and film with a key ingredient of Dutch wax-printed cotton that appears within his tailored costumes. This wonderful patterned fabric was the starting point for our ideas.

The activities during the project included movement games with long lengths of batik fabric outdoors, mark making with mallets and natural plant dye, kite making with willow, tie-dye, wax resist, painting, sculpture building and newspaper clothes making.
